Death to the Sound Bite: Context Is Everything (The News - Part 1)

Death to the Sound Bite: Context Is Everything (The News - Part 1)

Unfortunately, active listening is in short supply in our world of headlines and seven-second sound bytes. That's why I’m a strong advocate for reducing our consumption of social media, nighly news and sitcoms in favour of information sources that can offer more complete stories, the most effective of which are non-fiction books and thought-provoking articles and documentaries. And yes, some blogs.

Only when ideas are fully expressed and explored can they be understood. And, to our detriment, we just don’t seem to have the appetite to wade through the full explanation of important concepts that affect our daily lives and our potential for a promising future. Unfortunately, this lack of appetite carries with it some unintended consequences.

My 2015-2016 Reading List

My 2015-2016 Reading List

I finally get to post my third summary edition of a year's worth of reading (for reference, here's the first year and second year). From April 2015 to March 2016, I've managed to read, and learn from, a total of 74 books. That's 218 in total since becoming truly free to pursue.

I can't believe I've just wrapped up three years of what I consider hard-core reading. I love diving into so many exciting topics and it gets even better when I get to draw connections between subjects and ideas I previously thought unrelated.

The Ultimate Gift - Part 2: The Twelve Gifts

Just under two months ago, I wrote Part 1 of this two-part series. At that time, I focused on the book The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die by John Izzo. It seemed an appropriate choice given that the time the Holidays tends to be one of reflection and introspection for many of us.

Now that we’re in the New Year, I’d like to introduce another book: The Ultimate Gift by Jim Stovall. Top 12 Life-enhancing Books

Books are the best way to get a deep understanding of what a person is trying to convey. They're there for us when we're ready for them. They're patient teachers who allow us to set the pace. And the very best books are those that offer perspective without pretence, unexpected lightbulb moments that enable us to make positive changes in our lives, or an experience that ignites our desire for more in real life. In short, books help us better understand our world and, ultimately, ourselves.

With so many to choose from, it’s hard to know where to turn to next. I’m hoping the following list of my top 12 recommendations can offer some assistance. I assembled it based on the last number of years of reading and present them in order of impact.
